Website SEO for local businesses in India: a plain-English guide for 2026

For a local business in India, website SEO means building one clear page for each service you offer, naming the areas you serve, making the site fast on an ordinary phone, showing trust signals customers recognise, and keeping your details identical to your Google Business Profile. If many customers speak a regional language, add key pages in that language too.

Why your website still matters when everyone uses Google Maps

It is tempting to think a Google Business Profile is enough. Many customers find you on Maps, call and come in. But your website does three jobs the profile cannot do alone.

First, it feeds the profile. Google's local results look at how well your business matches a search, and a site that explains each service in detail gives Google far more to match.

Second, it is the main source for AI assistants. When BrightLocal studied local searches in ChatGPT, business websites were 58% of the sources it showed, and 72% for buying-intent searches.

Third, it is where customers check you before they commit: prices, photos, credentials, directions. Just 35% of small businesses in BrightLocal's 2025 survey even had a Google Business Profile, and only 40% had a dedicated website, so doing this well still sets you apart.

Search in India is Google, on a phone, increasingly in your customer's language

In India, the question of "which search engine" is settled. StatCounter put Google at 96.63% of search engine market share in India in September 2026.

The bigger shift is language. The Kantar and IAMAI "Internet in India 2024" report found 57% of internet users prefer content in regional languages, and rural users (488 million) now outnumber urban users (397 million).

Google has followed. AI Mode launched in India in June 2025, added Hindi in September 2025 and seven more Indian languages in October 2025: Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Google says India has its largest user base for voice and visual search globally.

What that means for you: if your customers talk to you in Kannada or Marathi, they probably search in it too, sometimes by voice. An English-only site leaves those searches to someone else.

Build one page for every service, not one page for everything

One of the most common problems on small business websites is a "Services" page with a list of ten services and two lines each. Google cannot match a detailed search to a two-line mention, and an AI assistant has nothing to quote.

Whitespark's 2026 survey of local search experts ranked a dedicated page for each service as the top factor for local organic rankings.

Each service page should have:

  1. A heading that matches how people search: "Root canal treatment in Whitefield", not "Endodontic Solutions".
  2. A two or three sentence answer at the top: what it is, who it is for, roughly what it costs and how long it takes.
  3. Details: the process, what is included, materials or brands used, aftercare.
  4. Proof: your own photos, the qualified person who does it, years of experience, a few genuine reviews.
  5. A clear next step: call, WhatsApp, book or visit, with the button working on a phone.
  6. A short FAQ from questions customers actually ask you.

Tell Google and AI where you are, in words

A map embed is not enough. Search engines read text, so say where you are and where you serve:

  • Your full address on every page, usually in the footer, written exactly as on your Google profile, including the PIN code.
  • Landmarks customers use: "opposite Forum Mall", "near Pali railway station".
  • Areas you serve, if you travel to customers: list the neighbourhoods or towns on a service area page.
  • A contact page with your phone number as clickable text, opening hours, directions and parking information.

Avoid the old trick of creating dozens of near-identical pages for every suburb ("plumber in Area 1", "plumber in Area 2" with only the name changed). Google treats these as doorway pages, which its spam policies prohibit. A page for an area is fine only if it has genuinely useful, different content for that area.

Add regional language pages the right way

If a meaningful share of your customers prefer Hindi, Tamil, Marathi or another language, translate your most important pages first: home, top services, contact. You do not need to translate everything.

Do it properly:

  1. Use a real translation, checked by a fluent speaker. Machine translation of medical, legal or financial content can be dangerously wrong.
  2. Give each language its own address, for example yoursite.com/hi/ for Hindi, so Google can index both versions.
  3. Add hreflang tags so Google knows which page is the Hindi version of which English page.
  4. Link between the language versions with a visible language switch.
  5. Keep facts identical: same prices, phone number and hours in every language.

Write the way your customers speak. Many people search in Hinglish or mixed language ("best dentist near me Hindi mein"), so natural phrasing beats formal textbook language.

Make it fast on the phone your customers actually use

BrightLocal's 2026 research found 73% of local searches start on a mobile phone. That survey is from the US. In India, where most people go online through a phone, often a budget Android on a patchy connection, mobile matters even more.

That makes speed and simplicity a business issue, not a technical one. Across all websites, only 48% pass Google's Core Web Vitals on mobile, according to the 2025 Web Almanac.

Quick wins that work on most small business sites:

  • Resize photos before uploading. A 5 MB photo from your phone should be under 200 KB on the web.
  • Remove sliders, auto-playing videos and pop-ups from the top of the page.
  • Use one or two fonts, not five.
  • Keep the call and WhatsApp buttons visible without scrolling.

Show the trust signals Indian customers look for

Customers decide fast. BrightLocal's research found 75% decide within 30 minutes of searching, and 72% consider three businesses or fewer. Your site has to answer "can I trust them?" at a glance.

Signals that work well for Indian businesses:

  • GST number and registered business name in the footer, if you are registered.
  • Professional registration where relevant, such as a doctor's or architect's registration details.
  • Real photos of your shop, clinic, team and work.
  • Clear prices or price ranges, and payment options such as UPI, cards and EMI.
  • Google reviews quoted or embedded, with a link to see them all.
  • A named owner or doctor, with a photo and short background.

Connect your website and your Google Business Profile

Your website and your profile should tell exactly the same story:

  • Same name, address, phone and hours on both.
  • Profile website link pointing to your home page or, for multi-branch businesses, that branch's own page.
  • Services on your profile matching your service pages.
  • Photos on your profile that also appear on your site.

Then run both through a check. Our free SEARCH ONE audit reviews one page of your website, and the free GMB ONE audit reviews your Google Business Profile, including whether your phone number appears on your linked website. Questions local business owners ask

Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?

Yes, if you want to be found for specific services and recommended by AI assistants. Your profile shows basic details, but your website explains each service, price and proof in depth, and AI tools rely heavily on business websites as sources.

Should my website be in Hindi or English?

Start with the language most of your customers use, and add the second for your most important pages. 57% of Indian internet users prefer regional-language content, so a well-translated home page, top services and contact page are often worth it.

How many service pages should I have?

One for each service people search for separately and that you want customers for. A clinic might need separate pages for root canals, implants and braces, but not a separate page for every minor procedure.

Can I make pages for every area in my city?

Only if each page has genuinely useful, different content for that area. Copy-paste pages with just the area name changed are doorway pages under Google's spam policies and can hurt your whole site.

How long does local SEO take to work?

Fixing basics like indexing and contact details can help within weeks. Ranking new service pages for competitive searches usually takes several months, depending on your area and competition.
