The short answer
Most of your customers find you on a phone, often on mobile data. If the page is still blank after a few seconds, many of them go back and tap the next result.
Google measures this with three numbers it calls Core Web Vitals: how fast the main content shows, how quickly the page reacts to a tap, and how much it jumps around while loading. It recommends getting all three into the good range.
The usual causes on small business sites
On small business sites, the same few causes come up again and again:
- Huge images. A photo straight off a phone is often several megabytes. Resize it to the width it's shown at and save it as WebP. On WordPress, an image plugin can do this for every image at once.
- Too many plugins, apps or widgets. Each chat bubble, slider, review widget and popup adds its own code. Remove the ones nobody uses.
- A slow server. If the server takes more than about 0.8 seconds to start sending the page, no amount of image work will fix it. Cheap shared hosting is the usual reason; a caching plugin or a better plan helps.
- A heavy page builder or theme. Some themes load fonts, animations and scripts the page never uses. Switching is a bigger job, so fix the three above first.
- A video or slider at the top. It's usually the biggest thing on the page and the first thing a phone has to load. A single still image often works just as well.
What to fix first
Start with your home page and your busiest service page. If the main content number is slow, look at the top image first. If the tap response is slow, look at chat widgets and other scripts. If the page jumps, give images and adverts a fixed size so the space is held while they load.
Test again after each change. That way you'll know which change helped.
Questions
Is this the same as Google PageSpeed Insights?
Yes, the numbers come from Google's PageSpeed Insights, tested as a phone. We show fewer of them and explain what each one means for a customer.
Why is my score different every time?
The score comes from a single test load, and that changes with server load, network and adverts on the page. A few points either way is normal. The visitor figures, when Google has them, are steadier because they cover the last 28 days of real Chrome users.
Does speed affect my Google ranking?
It plays a part. Google recommends good Core Web Vitals and says they line up with what its ranking systems reward, but a fast page with weak content won't outrank a slower page that answers the question better. Treat speed as removing a reason for people to leave.
Does speed matter for AI assistants?
Less directly. AI crawlers mostly read the text your server sends, so a page that's slow because of large images still gets read. A page that takes too long to respond at all, or only shows its text after scripts run, can be skipped.
Why doesn't my site have visitor figures?
Google only shows them when enough Chrome users have visited the page or site. Many small business sites don't have enough traffic yet, so you get the lab test only.
