Google reviews in 2026: how to get more, reply well and stay inside the rules

To get more Google reviews, ask every customer, soon after a good experience, with a direct review link or QR code, and never offer anything in return or ask only happy customers. Reply to every review, good or bad, within a day or two, in your own words. Customers increasingly ignore reviews older than three months, so a steady flow matters more than a one-time push.

How much do reviews really matter now?

More than ever, and the bar keeps rising. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey of 1,002 consumers found 97% read reviews for local businesses, and 41% always do, up from 29% a year earlier.

Star ratings work like a filter before anyone reads a word:

Minimum star rating consumers will consider

The 4-star group rose from 55% and the 4.5-star group from 17% in the 2025 survey.

Volume matters too: 47% said they will not use a business with fewer than 20 reviews. And reviews feed the map rankings. A high rating and the number of reviews with text are both in the top ten factors in Whitespark's 2026 local ranking survey.

Why old reviews stop working

A shop with 300 reviews from 2021 and nothing since looks, to a customer, like a shop that might have closed or slipped. Most people now look only at recent feedback.

In BrightLocal's separate 2026 decision research, 21% of consumers had rejected a business because its reviews were out of date. The lesson: aim for a few new reviews every week, not a big campaign once a year.

What Google's rules allow, and what gets reviews removed

Google's policy on fake engagement is stricter than many businesses realise. You can ask every customer for an honest review. You cannot:

  • Offer anything in return: discounts, free items, cashback, lucky draws or payment, for writing, changing or removing a review.
  • Ask only happy customers, or discourage unhappy ones. This is called review gating, and Google lists "selectively solicit positive reviews" as prohibited.
  • Have staff or family review you, or anyone with a conflict of interest, including former employees and business partners.
  • Set review quotas for staff or ask for reviews that mention a particular staff member.
  • Pressure customers to review on the spot, or ask for specific content.
  • Post reviews from multiple accounts or buy reviews from any service.

Google enforces this at scale. In 2024 it blocked or removed more than 240 million policy-violating reviews and more than 12 million fake Business Profiles, and placed posting restrictions on over 900,000 accounts. If your reviews suddenly disappear, a breach of these rules (yours or a vendor's) is the first thing to check.

How to ask for reviews the right way

The best system is the one your team will actually use every day. For most Indian businesses that looks like this:

  1. Get your review link. In your Google Business Profile, choose Ask for reviews (or Get more reviews) and copy the short link. Turn it into a QR code too.
  2. Pick the moment. Ask when the customer is happiest: after a successful treatment, at delivery, when they pick up an order, or after a project is signed off.
  3. Ask everyone the same way. "If you have a minute, an honest Google review really helps a small business like ours." No conditions, no filtering.
  4. Follow up once on WhatsApp or SMS the same day, with the link and the customer's name. One reminder is fine; three is pressure.
  5. Put the QR code where people wait: the billing counter, reception desk, delivery bag or invoice.
  6. Make it easy in their language. A short note in Hindi or your local language can lift responses from customers who are less comfortable in English.

How fast should you reply, and what should you say?

Customers now expect a reply, and they expect it quickly.

When consumers expect a business to respond to a review

Share of consumers giving each expectation. Same-day expectations rose from 6% and next-day from 18% in 2025.

Source: BrightLocal, Local Consumer Review Survey 2026.

89% expect owners to respond, 80% are likely to use a business that replies to all its reviews, and 50% are put off by generic, templated replies.

A good reply is short and specific:

  • For positive reviews: thank them by name, mention what they mentioned ("glad the bridal set fitting went smoothly"), invite them back.
  • For negative reviews: thank them, apologise for the experience without arguing, state one fact if needed, and offer to fix it offline with a direct contact. Then actually follow up.
  • Never share a customer's private details, health information or order history in a public reply.

Google's Gemini app can now draft review replies from your Business Profile, which saves time. Edit every draft so it sounds like you and refers to what the customer actually said.

What to do about fake or unfair reviews

Not every bad review is fake, and not every fake review will be removed. Here's a calm way to handle it:

  1. Check your records. Is there any sign this person was a customer? A real but angry customer deserves a real reply, not a removal request.
  2. Reply publicly, briefly and politely. Future customers read how you handle criticism.
  3. Report it if it breaks Google's rules: spam, off-topic, conflict of interest (for example, a competitor), offensive content or a review of the wrong business. Use the flag option on the review or the reviews management tool in your profile.
  4. Keep evidence such as screenshots and dates, in case you need to appeal.
  5. Do not retaliate with fake positive reviews. It risks your whole profile.

The best long-term defence is volume. A single unfair one-star review hurts far less among 150 genuine recent reviews than among 12.

Review questions, answered

Can I offer a discount for a Google review?

No. Google prohibits offering money, discounts, free goods or services in exchange for reviews, including for changing or removing a review. Reviews collected this way can be removed and the business may face restrictions.

Can I ask only my happy customers for reviews?

No. Selectively asking satisfied customers, or discouraging unhappy ones, is review gating and breaks Google's policy. Ask every customer the same way and let them decide what to write.

Why did my Google reviews disappear?

Google's automated systems remove reviews that look like they break policy, for example reviews from staff, or reviews posted after an incentive campaign. Check whether anyone offered rewards or asked staff to post, and stop it immediately.

How quickly should I reply to Google reviews?

Within one or two days if you can. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 19% of consumers expected a same-day reply, 32% expected one by the next day, and 81% expected one within a week.

Can I delete a bad Google review?

Business owners cannot delete reviews. You can reply publicly and report reviews that break Google's policies, such as spam, conflicts of interest or offensive content. Google decides whether to remove them.
