The short answer

llms.txt is a small text file at yoursite.com/llms.txt that gives AI tools a short map of your site. It is optional. Google says its Search ignores it, so it won't move your Google rankings.

It takes ten minutes and does no harm, which is why we still suggest one. Just do it after the things that change results: letting AI crawlers in, answering questions clearly on your pages, and keeping your Google profile complete.

What a good file looks like

The format comes from the proposal at llmstxt.org. Only the first line is required.

How to add it to your site

  • WordPress

    Some SEO plugins, including Yoast SEO, can create the file for you. Otherwise upload llms.txt to your site's main folder with your host's file manager.

  • Shopify

    Shopify doesn't let you upload a file to the top of your domain. Yoast SEO for Shopify and some other apps can create llms.txt for you.

  • Wix and other site builders

    Check your platform's app store or help pages. If it can't be done, skip it: the file is optional.

  • Any other site

    Upload it so it opens at yourbusiness.com/llms.txt as plain text. Then run this checker again to confirm.

Questions

Will llms.txt help my Google rankings?

No. Google's own guide for AI features says Google Search ignores llms.txt and similar AI text files, so they neither help nor harm your rankings or your place in AI Overviews.

Then why have one at all?

It is a cheap, harmless map of your site for AI tools and agents that do look for it. Chrome's Lighthouse now checks for one in its experimental agent section, and some AI coding and research tools read it when they visit a site. Do it after the things that matter more: crawler access, clear answers on your pages, and your Google profile.

Do ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity read it?

None of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or Perplexity has said its search or answers depend on llms.txt. Their crawlers read your normal pages, so those pages are what count.

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may read. llms.txt suggests what is worth reading. Blocking a crawler in robots.txt is not undone by listing pages in llms.txt.

What should I put in it?

Your business name, one sentence on what you do, for whom and where, then links to the pages that answer real customer questions: services, prices, contact, and your best guides. Keep it short.

Does this tool change anything on my website?

No. It reads your public llms.txt, home page and sitemap. The draft is yours to edit, and nothing is published until you upload it yourself.
