How Indians are searching now
Watch someone search on a phone in a busy market and you'll often see them hold the microphone button instead of typing. Google has said India has "our largest user base for both voice and visual search globally".
The tools have caught up with that habit. AI Mode, Google's conversational search, launched in India in June 2025, added Hindi in September 2025, and added Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu in October 2025. That same month Google brought Search Live, where you talk to Search and point your camera at things, to India in English and Hindi. In March 2026, Google launched Ask Maps, a Gemini-powered way to ask Google Maps questions, in India and the US at the same time.
Language is the other half of the story. The Kantar and IAMAI "Internet in India 2024" report found 57% of internet users prefer content in regional languages, and that rural users now outnumber urban users.

Why voice and AI searches are different from typed ones
People type in fragments: "dentist bandra". They speak in sentences: "Which dentist near Bandra station is open on Sunday evening?" Often in a mix of languages: "Bandra mein Sunday ko khula dentist kaun sa hai?"
That changes what a business needs to be found for:
- Questions, not keywords. Spoken searches are full questions with conditions attached: open now, near a landmark, under a budget, for kids.
- Fewer winners. A voice assistant or AI answer usually names one to three businesses, not a page of ten. Being fifth is the same as being invisible.
- Mixed language. Many customers switch between English and Hindi or their regional language in the same sentence. AI systems handle this well, but they need clear information to match against.
- Landmarks over addresses. People say "near the bus stand" or "opposite the temple", not "Plot 42, Sector 3".
Set up your Google Business Profile for spoken searches
Your profile is what Google's voice answers, AI Mode and Ask Maps read first for local questions. Make sure it can answer the full spoken question, not just the keyword:
- Most specific primary category. "Pediatric dentist" answers "dentist for my child" better than "dentist".
- Services in everyday words. Add the terms customers say, like "root canal", "teeth cleaning", "braces for kids", not just clinical names.
- Accurate hours and special hours. "Open on Sunday?" and "open now?" are everyday spoken conditions. Wrong hours mean you're left out.
- Attributes. Wheelchair access, parking, women-led, accepts UPI, appointment required: each one can match a spoken condition.
- A description that mentions your area and landmark. For example, "Family dental clinic opposite Pali bus stand, open seven days a week."
- Photos of your entrance and signboard, so people who find you by voice recognise you when they arrive.
Our field-by-field profile checklist covers each of these in detail.

Reviews in your customers' language help too
When an AI answers "which sweet shop near me has the best kaju katli?", it can only use what people have written. Reviews that mention specific products, services and situations give it material to work with.
You can't tell customers what to write, and you must never offer anything in return for a review. But you can ask in the customer's language, and suggest they mention what they came in for. "Agar aapko accha laga ho, toh Google par ek review zaroor likhiye, aapne kya liya tha woh bhi bata dijiye" is perfectly fine.
Reply in the language the customer used. It's polite, it shows you're active, and it adds more natural language to your profile. Our Google reviews guide explains exactly what Google's rules allow.
Make your website answer spoken questions
Your website feeds the AI answers too, especially for questions your profile can't answer in full.
- Add a short FAQ to each service page, written the way people ask out loud: "How much does a root canal cost in Pune?", "Can I walk in without an appointment?"
- Answer in the first sentence. Voice and AI answers lift short, direct answers. Put the detail after.
- Mention landmarks and areas in text. "Five minutes from Andheri station, next to the post office."
- Give key pages a regional-language version if many customers speak it, with proper translation and hreflang tags. Our India website SEO guide explains how.
- Keep it fast on budget phones. Most voice searches happen on phones, often on patchy connections.
Check how you sound to an AI
Try this with a friend or family member who speaks the way your customers do:
- Ask them to hold the microphone in Google and ask for your type of business in their own words, in whichever language they'd normally use.
- Ask the same question in Google Maps using Ask Maps, if it's on their phone.
- Try the same in ChatGPT or Gemini by voice.
Write down whether you were named and which businesses were. Then compare those businesses' profiles with yours. Our free GMB ONE audit does that comparison automatically against three nearby businesses.
Questions about voice and AI local search in India
Does Google voice search work in Hindi and other Indian languages?
Yes. Google supports voice search in many Indian languages, and its AI Mode now answers in Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu as well as English. Search Live, which lets you talk to Search, launched in India in English and Hindi in October 2025.
How do I rank in voice search for 'near me' questions?
Make your Google Business Profile complete and accurate, with the most specific category, correct hours, services in everyday words and your area and landmark in the description. Voice answers usually name only one to three businesses, so completeness and good reviews matter more than ever.
Should my Google Business Profile be in Hindi?
Your business name must match your real-world name. Your description and services can use the words your customers use, and you can reply to reviews in the language the customer wrote in. Keep the core facts, like address and phone, identical everywhere.
What is Ask Maps and is it available in India?
Ask Maps is a Gemini-powered feature in Google Maps that answers questions about places in plain language. Google launched it in India and the US in March 2026.
Do Hinglish searches find businesses?
Yes. People often mix Hindi and English when they speak, and modern AI search systems generally handle mixed language well. Clear, specific information on your profile and website gives them the facts to match, whatever language the question comes in.
